Hot of the heels of another great year at the Emmy’s, HBO will be releasing Bored to Death: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray/ DVD Sept. 21.

The show deservedly won an Emmy for its great opening title sequence, but that is just one of the pleasures of this fantasy/comedy based on the semi-autobiographical writings of author Jonathan Ames.

Starring Jonathan Schwartzman as Ames and filmed on location in New York City, the story has a bit of a Woody Allen feel as we get hopelessly intangled in the life of the neourotic writer who is still recovering from the breakup with his girlfriend.

A fan of detective noir, Ames decides to moonlight as a private investigator, even though he has absolutely no experience as a P.I., aside from what he has read in books by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

The sign out front says Corner Bistro in Kissimmee has the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich  south of Geno’s in Philadelphia.

Five minutes after ingesting the restaurant’s 12-inch sandwich, a  beef and provolone cheese monstrosity pouring out of its authentic Amoroso roll, it would be awfully hard to find fault with that statement.

Restaurant owner John Howard is no stranger to the mystique of making a great Philly cheesesteak. A New Jersey guy, with lots of restaurant executive experience, Howard was practically raised on the Jersey/ Philadelphia hoagie, including packing plenty of sandwiches behind the counter as a youngster while working at the Jersey shore.

It took three years for director Robert Rodriguez’s trailer-short Machete to make the transition into a full-length movie.

Rodriguez has all the right moves and the expertise to take his popular “preview” sandwiched in between the two Grindhouse features from 2007, and turn it into a feature film.

Hopefully, Sylvester Stallone is paying attention and will learn something about how a retro-action film should be made the next time he wants to be make another The Expendables.

It will be a touch of Rome and Naples when the Viva Italia Dinner Show show comes to the Osceola Center for the Arts Sunday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Edward A. Moore Studio Theatre.
The popular show has been touring Central Florida audiences for more than five years and now will have its first stop at the art center.
Each show features an evening of Italian food and outstanding entertainment presented by an ensemble of operatic singers and instrumentalists performing Italian music, from Neapolitan songs to current popular favorites.
Tickets for the show are $30 and include the show, an Italian dinner, soda and coffee with an additional charge for wine.
The production company got its start in Boston before moving to the Orlando area.
The group is part of Cabaret Expresso Productions which performs at area restaurants as well as special holiday shows including Christmas themed shows and New Years.
Isaac Kriger, who produces the shows, said Central Florida is a great place for musical talent.
The performers are professional singers and musicians who have performed in theaters, concert halls, movies and television nationally and internationally.
The current economic climate means even more peformers are working part-time at the profession they love.
To reserve a seat for the September dinner theater, call 407-846-6257, Ext. 0 or stop by the center office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The center is at 2411 E. U.S. Highway 192 in Kissimmee.

You’ve got to wonder why complete throwaway trash such as The Expendables can drum up fairly decent numbers at the box office, while a similar action-comedy like MacGruber died at the cinema just a few short months ago.

MacGruber is not ingenious comedy, but this crude, lewd and sometimes funny film, definitely does have its moments.

You get what you pay for.

And if all you want for your $10.50 (regular adult admission at The Loop in Kissimmee)  movie ticket is lots of explosions, knife and gun fights, flying fists and a tired-looking Sylvester Stallone, well The Expendables is money well spent.

Stallone ( I am not sure if it is the facelifts or some other kind of enhancement but his eyebrows seem to be almost at his hairline) is the major cause for what is wrong this high-octane action film.  The Expendables  is surprising dull when things are not blowing up.

Surf will be up day or night, rain or shine at the new Fantasy Surf attraction at FantasyWorld resort beginning in October.

Surfing and Osceola County seem to be an unlikely pair in the landlocked Kissimmee area but that will all change with the arrival of Fantasy Surf.

The $4 million indoor aquatic recreation venue will open at 5151 Kyngs Heath Road at Vacation Villas.

The perfect wave will be unending, according to Chuck Richardson, director of hospitality and marketing for the resort.

Special to the News-Gazette

Looking for something fun to do in Osceola County this August? Then you should stop by the Osceola Center for the Arts for its upcoming production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” Director Jeremiah Krivinchuk promises “fun for the whole family” with this classic musical comedy.

Set in 1958, “Bye Bye Birdie” tells the story of what happens when an Elvis Presley-like character gets drafted into the Army. That character, Conrad Birdie, with the assistance of his agent, Albert Peterson, and Peterson’s girlfriend, Rose Alvarez, heads to Sweet Apple, Ohio, to give one lucky fan a goodbye kiss before taking enlisting in the Army.
