Not to be confused with HBO’s award-winning series “The Sopranos,” Beth Baumwell and fellow members of the Solivita Scrapanos are armed only with glue, scissors and an assortment of other tools and materials for their favorite hobby, scrapbooking. They not only enjoy it, they’re admittedly hooked on it.
“It’s definitely an addiction. There should be a 12-step program for it,” Baumwell said.
The Solivita Scrapanos are one of 144 resident-run clubs and organizations in the 4,300-acre active adult community being developed by Avatar Properties on the Polk County side of Poinciana
“We have a common goal to preserve memories of our families, our lives, our heritages and the trips we’ve taken and places we’ve been,” said Baumwell, who has been “scrapping” for the past 15 years. “Scrapbooking tells the stories behind your pictures and actually makes you a better photographer.  
“It’s a great way to honor our ancestors and provide some continuity and family history for our children,” said Baumwell, who has preserved photos of her ancestors, including a great-great-great-grandmother, who was born in 1785 and died in 1868.
Open to Solivita’s nearly 6,000 residents, the club meets the first and third Monday of each month in the Waterfront Gallery in Solivita’s Village Center.
“We’re as much a social club as a scrapbooking club,” said Baumwell, who started the club five years ago. “We talk about what’s going on in our lives and with our families. And we’re open to each other’s suggestions, share ideas on page layouts and design and are willing to offer each other support and materials. We also encourage fledgling scrappers to ask questions which helps them learn to stretch their creative abilities.”
In addition to scrapbooking photographs, the Scrapanos also do other paper arts such as greeting cards and wall art. These projects can incorporate ephemera such as concert and event tickets and programs, flyers, postcards and newspaper and magazine articles.
Club members also have made gift albums for significant occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, baby births, weddings and memorials.
“These gifts are precious to the recipients,” Baumwell said. “Most of all, scrapbooks keep your memories alive.”
